About Us

Having started in 1970 as a humble playgroup, with just about enough paperwork to fill a small drawer, the Children’s Workshop is now a vibrant and very successful Early Years Foundation Stage Pre-School managed by Mrs Sarah (Senior Manager) who calmly and skilfully oversees all the Children’s Workshop good practices, while Mrs Jacky (Business Manager) with efficiency and humour takes on the administration and business aspects. They both have knowledge and information at their fingertips and are always ready to help.

We are a term time only setting and are open from 9.00am – 1.30pm. We are registered to provide a maximum 68 places per morning and we offer 3 ¼, 4 ¼ or 4 ½ hour sessions Monday-Friday.

Our ethos is to provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment in which each child is valued, can grow in confidence and self esteem, can develop emotionally, physically and intellectually and can progress to school confident, ready and enthusiastic for the future.

The pre-school is a ‘pack away’ setting situated in the Methodist Church Building in East Molesey, KT8 9JU. It is conveniently located near to local primary schools and is set in spacious premises. We have strong links with our nearest infant schools and a strong partnership with their Early Years teams. We regularly meet to discuss children’s outcomes and what we can put in place to ensure that the children are ready to make the transition to school successful.

The Children’s Workshop has so many outstanding features, high quality resources, separate activity rooms, comprehensive planning based on children’s individual needs and peppered with inspiration from children and adults, fantastic children (thank you, parents!), and spacious play gardens but our 2 teams of ‘Pink Ladies’ with their Group Managers, Mrs Fiona and Mrs Helen (Red Group) and Mrs Angela (Blue Group) really are exceptional. They combine their skills and expertise with enthusiasm and an abundance of professional love for the children and empathy for parents and carers.

Our premises are spacious and bright. The Red Group room has 3 rooms and Blue Group is based in a very large hall. We have direct access to a lovely outside space includes a large play area with permanently fixed climbing equipment and a large covered gazebo. Our play equipment allows children to take ‘safe risks’. We also have an under-cover area where we have sand and water play and a woodworking area. We effectively make use all of our space and have a small wildlife area where children can look for insects and observe birds/wildlife.

We have an additional play area to the front of the building with astro-turf and an area where bikes, trikes and scooters can be used. This area also has a cosy reading den large sand pit, mud kitchen and small nature planting area.

There is a ramp leading up to the Play area for wheel chair use. Our premises are all on one level and are very user friendly for anyone with disabilities. There are also disabled toilets on the premises.

We are an inclusive setting and we welcome children and their families form all nationalities and cultures, valuing the uniqueness and individuality that this brings. We have many years of experience of supporting children who have SEND and are committed to ensuring that each child achieves their potential in a totally inclusive setting.

Our children grow and develop confidently and enthusiastically within the supportive and happy atmosphere. Playing can be a very serious business, often involving considerable concentration, but they enjoy their own successes with big smiles and learn to appreciate those of their little friends. They follow the examples of the Staff in showing kindness, respect and understanding towards each other.

We are registered to have a total 68 children per morning and have 19 staff: 14 staff are qualified at level 3 in a relevant Early Years Education qualification (2 are currently studying), 1 member of staff is qualified at level 5 and 2 members of staff have level 6 Qualified Teacher Status. All of our staff are part-time. Our staffing allows us to implement a ratio of 1 staff member to every 5 children attending per session. The Senior Manager and Business Manager (who both hold ILM Early Years Leadership & Management qualifications) are not included in the staffing ratios.

ALL staff hold current 12 x hour paediatric first aid certificates which are renewed every 3 years.

ALL staff attend relevant and regular safeguarding training. Helen Rowling has completed Modules 1 and 2 in safeguarding and is the named DSL lead. The Senior Manager has also completed this training.

ALL staff have completed Level 2 qualifications in Safer Food Handling.

3 members of our staff have had recent Makaton training.

2 members of staff are undertaking level 3 Early Years Education training and it is our aim to have all staff trained to a minimum of level 3 by the end of this academic year (2018-2019).

ALL staff have completed ‘Prevent’ Training.

Our staff retention is excellent and we have managed to retain our staff for many years. Our longest serving member has been with us for 35 years!
